Rules for the selection of food combinations

Food is necessary for the body. It should serve two purposes – supply all essential nutrients to the body and maintain the acid-alkali balance in the blood. The body requires five essential nutrients – proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals. But sometimes the food rich in these nutrients contradict each other. There is a term ‘selection of food combination’ that will explains the topic in detail. There are many food combinations that may cause ill-effects to the health.

Rules of food combination

One can have proper digestion only if he follows the rules of food combination. If these are violated, even good nutritious food may produce toxic materials as a result of decomposition in the digestive tract. For instance, there is no enzyme in the stomach which can digest carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are digested either in the mouth or in the small intestine. On the other hand, the digestion of proteins takes place in stomach.

Let us consider a meal that contains large quantities of both carbohydrates and proteins. If it is masticated properly, the enzymes in the saliva in the mouth carry out partial digestion of the carbohydrates. But if the food is swallowed without adequate mastication, the carbohydrates will remain undigested in the stomach while the proteins are being digested. They will, therefore decay and produce toxic materials.

- Carbohydrates should never be mixed with sour foods.
- Large amount of proteins should not be taken simultaneously with large amounts of fats.
- Protein rich foods should not be ingested with sour fruits.

One should follow the above rules of food combination to avoid the formation of any toxic material. These rules must be followed by people with weaker constitution or weaker digestive powers.
